WORK BOATS, Grand Union Canal Carrying Co.

This firm was formed in 1929. In 1934 GUCCC expanded to 362 boats. Built by Harland & Wolff at Woolwich, Yarwood & Son at Northwich and Walkers of Rickmansworth. Including 'Star' and 'Town' class types. 24 pairs of iron-sided elm bottomed composite boats were commissioned. In the 1940's many were nationalised and run by British Waterways. Most are now privately owned.
